Squte: Launching an AI Dental Scribe for UK Dentists
The Challenge
UK dentists write a 17-section clinical note after every appointment, usually after the patient has left. Most AI scribes on the market were built for US medicine: they write SOAP notes, treat audio retention as an afterthought, and quote prices 'plus VAT' that dental practices — whose care is VAT-exempt — can't reclaim. The regulatory line was drawn on 29 July 2026, when the MHRA published guidance on ambient voice technology: tools that only transcribe and summarise are not medical devices; tools that suggest diagnoses or act without clinician review can be. Squte Ltd, a WayaNerd Ltd company, set out to build a UK-first scribe that lives inside those lines.
The Solution
Squte (squte.co.uk) asks the patient's consent first — the wording, how it was given and the time are saved with the visit, and nothing is recorded if the patient says no. It transcribes during the appointment and drafts the UK 17-section note, with FDI tooth numbers and BPE scores taken from what is said, while the dentist sees the next patient. The dentist checks every note, changes it by voice ('add that the patient declined X-rays') and signs it; nothing is filed until it is signed, and Squte never suggests a diagnosis or treatment. The signed note is copied into Dentally, Software of Excellence, R4 or any practice system. Data is encrypted on AWS servers in London, speech recognition runs on Deepgram's EU service with model improvement switched off, note drafting uses Google Gemini on Vertex AI through the EU endpoint, nothing is used to train models, and audio is deleted 30 days after the note is signed. Pricing is £25, £45 or £79 per clinician per month with no VAT to add, and a 14-day free trial. Squte launched in October 2026; it is not yet listed on NHS England's self-certified AVT registry, and says so on its own site.
